Pheochromocytomas vs adenoma: Role of venous phase CT enhancement
American Journal of Roentgenology Apr 02, 2018
Mohammed MF, et al. - Researchers contemplated whether the quantitative measurement of venous phase enhancement on CT could aid in distinguishing between a pheochromocytoma from an adrenal adenoma. During this research, an estimation was performed of the lesion densities on the 60-second venous phase CT on all adrenal lesions to determine the venous phase enhancement values. It was reported that a prominent subset of pheochromocytomas mimics adenomas on absolute or relative percentage washout calculations. The nodules with venous phase enhancement of 85 HU or more, however, displayed a greater likelihood of being pheochromocytomas than adenomas, irrespective of the lesion exhibiting absolute or relative percentage washout compatible with a lipid-poor adenoma. In order to avoid potential misdiagnoses, data recommended the interpretation of the typical values of absolute and relative percentage washout of adrenal adenoma along with the venous phase enhancement value.
