Phenome-wide association studies uncover a novel association of increased atrial fibrillation in males with systemic lupus erythematosus
Arthritis Care & Research Mar 04, 2018
Barnado A, et al. - Researchers assessed whether phenome-wide association studies (PheWAS) could function as an electronic health record (EHR) discovery tool for systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE) and uncover novel clinical relationships in male vs female SLE patients. Using PheWAS in order to compare males with females having SLE, a novel relationship of increased atrial fibrillation (AF) in SLE males was noted. Even after adjusting for age, sex, race, and CAD, SLE disease status was independently associated with AF. The utility of PheWAS as an EHR discovery tool for SLE was shown by the results.
