Pharmacologic intervention for the management of retained placenta: A systematic review and meta-analysis of randomized trials
American Journal of Obstetrics and Gynecology Jul 30, 2020
Patrick HS, Mitra A, Rosen T, et al. - Via performing a systematic review and meta-analysis, researchers examined the efficacy of pharmacologic interventions for the management of retained placenta. Searching PubMed, ClinicalTrials.gov, Cochrane Library, Web of Science, and Scopus, they identified 29 randomized controlled trials meeting the inclusion criteria (2,682 individuals). Findings suggest that relative to placebo or control, oxytocin via umbilical vein injection, prostaglandin agents, and nitroglycerin were associated with favorable outcomes in the management of retained placenta. They suggest carbetocin and prostaglandin agents as superior to oxytocin in decreasing the necessity for manual extraction or dilation and curettage.
