Persistent mucosal damage and the risk of epilepsy in people with celiac disease

European Journal of Neurology Jan 11, 2018

Kurien M, et al. - Here, the authors aimed to determine whether persistent villous atrophy (VA) on follow-up biopsy influenced long-term epilepsy risk and epilepsy-related hospital emergency admissions in people with celiac disease. On follow up biopsy, persisting VA was correlated with reduced future risk of developing epilepsy. However, it did not influence emergency epilepsy-related hospital admissions. To determine why persistent VA conferred this benefit, additional investigation was needed.
