Persistent headache and low back pain after accidental dural puncture in the obstetric population: A prospective, observational, multicentre cohort study
Anaesthesia Apr 28, 2021
Niraj G, Mushambi M, Gauthama P, et al. - In this multicentre prospective matched cohort study, experts aspired to explore whether accidental dural puncture could be correlated with persistent headache and back pain when compared with matched control parturients. They assessed the incidence of persistent headache following accidental dural puncture at nine UK obstetric units. Parturients who sustained an accidental dural puncture were paired with controls who had undergone an uneventful epidural insertion. At 18 months, the primary outcome was the occurrence of persistent headache. A total of 90 parturients who had an accidental dural puncture were matched with 180 controls. According to research, an accidental dural puncture has been linked to long‐term morbidity including persistent headache in parturients. This calls into question the current definition of post-dural puncture headache as a self-limiting condition and raises the prospect of clinical, financial, and medicolegal ramifications.
