Peripheral vasoconstriction during mental stress and adverse cardiovascular outcomes in patients with coronary artery disease
Circulation Research Nov 04, 2019
Kim JH, Almuwaqqat Z, Hammadah M, et al. - Researchers investigated if adverse cardiovascular outcomes among patients with coronary artery disease can be predicted by excessive digital vasoconstriction during acute mental stress. This study included 549 patients with stable coronary artery disease (age 63 ± 9, 76% male, 29% black). These individuals were asked to undergo mental stress testing with a standardized public speaking stressor and were observed prospectively for cardiovascular endpoints. By means of peripheral artery tonometry (PAT, Itamar Inc), a continuous record of digital pulse wave amplitude was obtained. Among the participants of this study, a higher risk of adverse cardiovascular outcomes was observed in relation to greater peripheral vasoconstriction with mental stress, denoted by a low stress/rest PAT ratio.
