Peripheral nerve stimulation and clinical outcomes: A retrospective case series
Pain Practice Apr 14, 2021
Warner NS, Schaefer KK, Eldrige JS, et al. - Researchers conducted a retrospective case series of adults undergoing peripheral nerve stimulation (PNS) implantation in order to describe the indications and clinical outcomes for patients undergoing PNS for chronic pain states. They identified a total of 72 patients who underwent PNS implantation, including 59 patients that received a preceding PNS trial (59/78; 76% progression rate) and 13 that did not receive a PNS trial. Outcomes revealed correlation of peripheral nerve stimulation with reduced pain scores, lower opioid utilization, and improved patient function at 6 months. Data overall yield support for PNS as a potentially effective nonopioid analgesic modality in chronic pain.
