Peripheral and central sensitization of pain in individuals with hand osteoarthritis and associations with self-reported pain severity
Arthritis & Rheumatology May 22, 2019
Pettersen PS, et al. - Researchers investigated pain sensitization in patients with hand osteoarthritis (OA). They also focused on how peripheral and central sensitization was associated with self-reported hand pain in these patients. They examined overall 282 participants (88% female) with a median age of 61 years (interquartile range 57–66). They found that patients with hand OA commonly had central sensitization. Higher hand pain intensity was reported in relation to lower local and widespread pressure pain thresholds and the presence of temporal summation, this was evident even following adjustment for demographics, psychosocial factors, and radiographic severity. This implies that sensitization could be a possible treatment target.
