Peripartum maternal hepatitis B care in a US Nationwide Data Set
Journal of Clinical Gastroenterology Oct 16, 2019
Chang MS, Wharam JF, Zhang F, et al. - Researchers used a national database to identify rates of maternal peripartum follow-up with a hepatitis B virus (HBV) specialist and determine factors correlated with a lack of follow-up. Using a national database (Optum) derived from commercial insurance claims with ∼46 million members ages 0 to 64 in all 50 states, women who delivered in 2000 to 2012 and were diagnosed with HBV were identified according to International Classification of Diseases-9 codes. Data reported that the HBV prevalence was 0.27%, and the median follow-up was 45 months. Just 21% of women had peripartum HBV specialist follow-up. In this large, diverse cohort representing all United States regions, maternal HBV specialist follow-up rates were extremely low. The strongest predictor of appropriate postpartum HBV laboratory testing was a referral to an HBV specialist. In uninsured populations, follow-up rates may be even lower.
