Peripartum blood transfusion among rural women in the United States
Obstetrics and Gynecology Feb 28, 2020
Hartenbach EM, et al. - Researchers conducted this population-based retrospective cohort study to assess the peripartum transfusion rates for rural women vs urban women in the United States. Geocoded birth records from 2014 to 2016 from the National Center for Health Statistics were utilized to investigate the rural-urban differences in blood transfusion among nulliparous women delivering singleton, vertex pregnancies at term. In rural areas, the probabilities of blood transfusion were higher for women. The association of transfusion and living in a micropolitan or noncore rural county diminished after adding delivery county to the regression model. The results indicate that more transfusion has been associated with the rurality of the county where the birth occurred. This can represent disparities in maternity and blood banking services in rural hospitals and needs more study in order to identify intervention opportunities.
