Peripapillary scleral bowing increases with age and is inversely associated with peripapillary choroidal thickness in healthy eyes

American Journal of Ophthalmology Apr 18, 2020

Wang YX, Yang H, Luo H, et al. - In non-highly myopic healthy eyes, researchers conducted this cross-sectional, multicenter study to use optical coherence tomography (OCT) to 3D characterize optic nerve head (ONH) peripapillary scleral bowing. Three hundred sixty-two non-highly myopic (+6 diopters (D) > spherical equivalent > -6D) eyes of 362 healthy individuals aging from 20-90 years had OCT ONH radial B-scan imaging. The outward peripapillary scleral bowing achieved substantial levels in non-highly myopic healthy eyes, was significantly increased with age and was independently linked to reduced peripapillary choroidal thickness. The results provide a normative foundation for characterizing this anatomy in high myopia and glaucoma, as well as in eyes with optic disc tilt, torsion and peripapillary atrophy.
