Peripapillary and macular vessel density measurement with optical coherence tomography angiography in exfoliation syndrome
Journal of Glaucoma Jan 16, 2021
Gür Güngör S, Sarigül Sezenöz A, Öztürk C, et al. - In this cross-sectional study, researchers compared peripapillary and macular perfused capillary densities with optical coherence tomography angiography (OCT-A) between patients with eyes having exfoliation syndrome (XFS) and normal age-matched healthy controls. Participants in the study were patients diagnosed with XFS at the Glaucoma Department from December 2017 to January 2020. Thirty-nine eyes of 39 XFS patients (26 women; mean age, 69.0 ± 8.1 y) and 39 eyes of 39 healthy patients (25 women; mean age, 68.0 ± 8.6 y) were enlisted. Although structural test results were comparable between the healthy and XFS groups, particularly peripapillary RNFLT and mean GCL+IPL, macular VD values in XFS eyes were lower. The results that include microvascular damage may be the mechanism underlying changes related to XFS and suggest that substantial structural damage precedes it.
