Periorbital sequelae after periosteal sweeping during external perforating osteotomy in rhinoplasty
JAMA Facial Plastic Surgery May 22, 2019
El-Sisi H, et al. - Researchers conducted this prospective cohort study of 28 patients investigating whether periorbital morbidities of the early postoperative period after external perforating lateral osteotomy in open rhinoplasty could be reduced by periosteal sweeping. Patients underwent periosteal sweeping on one side of the nose and periosteal preservation on the other side during external perforating lateral osteotomy. On postoperative day 1, significantly greater eyelid edema and periorbital ecchymosis were noted following periosteal sweeping compared to periosteal preservation. On postoperative days 7 and 21, significantly reduced eyelid edema and ecchymosis were noted in all pateints compared to day 1. In addition, they noted a reduction in subconjunctival hemorrhage between days 1 and 21. Findings suggest a possible utility of periosteal preservation during external perforating lateral osteotomy in minimization of early postoperative periorbital sequelae.
