Perioperative risk factors associated with morbidity and mortality following pediatric inpatient sinus surgery
Annals of Allergy, Rhinology, & Laryngology Oct 20, 2018
Burton BN, et al. - Researchers assessed a pediatric population for medical risk factors of morbidity and mortality following inpatient sinus surgery. They used data from the Kids’ Inpatient Database from 2003 to 2012, identifying 4,965 patients who had primary sinus surgery. In this study, the national comorbidity burden and risk factors for postoperative adverse events after inpatient sinus surgery were reported for the first time. The rate of inpatient morbidity was 6% and for mortality it was 1%. The most prevalent postoperative adverse events were respiratory complications and the most prevalent comorbidities were chronic sinusitis, acute sinusitis, and cystic fibrosis. Patients with inpatient morbidity had higher rates of pneumonia, mycoses, and nasal or paranasal benign neoplasm vs patients who did not experience any morbidity. Patients with leukemia and mycoses had the highest odds of inpatient morbidity and mortality.
