Perioperative prophylactic internal iliac artery balloon occlusion in the prevention of postpartum hemorrhage in placenta previa: A randomized controlled trial
American Journal of Obstetrics and Gynecology Jan 28, 2020
Yu SCH, Cheng YKY, Tse WT, et al. - Researchers examined if postpartum hemorrhage and other maternal complications could be reduced with performing internal iliac artery balloon occlusion during Cesarean delivery for placenta previa. In this prospective randomized controlled trial conducted at a tertiary university obstetric unit in Hong Kong, they randomized pregnant women who were diagnosed to have placenta previa at 34 weeks (defined as lower placenta edge within 2cm from the internal os) and required Cesarean delivery to either of the following two groups: internal iliac artery balloon occlusion group and standard management group. Outcomes revealed no reduction in postpartum hemorrhage or no change in maternal or neonatal morbidity when prophylactic internal iliac artery balloon occlusion was used in placenta previa patients undergoing Cesarean delivery.
