Perioperative outcomes of laparoscopic pancreaticoduodenectomy for benign and borderline malignant periampullary disease compared to open pancreaticoduodenectomy

Langenbeck's Archives of Surgery Jul 04, 2018

Lee CS, et al. - Researchers performed a comparison of perioperative outcomes between laparoscopic pancreaticoduodenectomy (LPD) and open pancreaticoduodenectomy (OPD) for benign and borderline malignant periampullary diseases. Analyzing 107 pancreaticoduodenectomy cases (76 patients underwent OPD and 31 patients received LPD) for non-malignant diseases from March 1993 to July 2017 suggested LPD as a safe procedure. It was noted to provide less postoperative pain and was associated with shortened length of hospitalization. Hence, for benign and borderline malignant periampullary disease, LPD could serve as the feasible alternative approach.
