Perioperative management of patients with cancer pain treated with opioids: A retrospective study
Journal of Anesthesia Jun 10, 2018
Fujita T, et al. - Researchers performed a retrospective analysis of patients who had been administered strong opioids for cancer pain and had undergone surgery with general anesthesia. The goal was to study perioperative management of these subjects to ultimately use the findings to establish a standard policy for their institute. Two patient groups were analyzed: those who had been administered their baseline opioids continuously during the perioperative period, and those who had discontinued baseline opioid use during this period. They found that when baseline opioids were discontinued during the perioperative period, exacerbation of early postoperative pain resulted, which caused increased adverse effects in the early postoperative period.
