Perioperative magnesium levels in total thyroidectomy and relationship to hypocalcemia

Brophy C, et al. - Given the association between hypomagnesemia and hypocalcemia after thyroidectomy, researchers sought to study the trend in magnesium levels in the days after thyroidectomy via analyzing calcium and magnesium levels on postoperative day 1 (POD1) and POD2 in retrospectively reviewed 173 thyroidectomies. After total thyroidectomy, magnesium levels showed a downward trajectory which continued through POD2 and was highly correlated with hypocalcemia.
