Perioperative factors influence the long-term outcomes of children and adolescents with repaired tetralogy of Fallot

Pediatric Cardiology Jun 12, 2018

Mercer-Rosa L, et al. - In this retrospective cohort study, the researchers tested the premise that early perioperative factors in patients being operated on for tetralogy of Fallot (TOF) contributed to long-term adverse right ventricular (RV) remodeling, diminished exercise capacity, and increased morbidity. This study was conducted on thirty-nine subjects operated on for TOF. Results revealed that duration of cardiopulmonary bypass and prior Blalock–Taussig (BT) shunt were linked with future catheterizations, while mechanical ventilation and BT shunt prior to complete surgical repair correlated with the number of future hospitalizations. These findings suggested that long-term RV remodeling and outcome in TO) could be portended by surgical and perioperative factors.
