Perioperative celecoxib and postoperative opioid use in hand surgery: A prospective cohort study
The Journal of Hand Surgery Jan 06, 2018
Stepan JG, et al. - This investigation was pursued to assess the impact of perioperative celecoxib on postoperative opioid intake. Furthermore, researchers investigated if perioperative administration of celecoxib decreased postoperative patient-reported pain and if patient demographic characteristics could predict postoperative pain and opioid intake. Findings demonstrated that receipt vs non-receipt of perioperative celecoxib resulted in similar postoperative pain and opioid intake. Also, for most patients undergoing soft tissue ambulatory hand surgery, 4 to 10 hydrocodone tablets were found to be sufficient to control postoperative pain regardless of study group. Limited duration and mild nature of pain after outpatient elective hand surgery were suggested as the probable reasons behind this finding.
