Perioperative acute ischemic stroke increases mortality after noncardiac, nonvascular, and non-neurologic surgery: A retrospective case series
Journal of Cardiothoracic and Vascular Anesthesia May 08, 2019
Wang H, et al. - Via this retrospective review of data from 351,531 patients, researchers investigated the factors predictive of in-hospital mortality in patients who developed perioperative acute ischemic stroke (PAIS; n=100) related to noncardiac, nonvascular, and non-neurologic surgery. With age, a significant increase in the risk of PAIS following noncardiac, nonvascular, and non-neurologic surgery was evident. An increase in the mortality rate was evident in relation to the development of PAIS. Preoperative atrial fibrillation, disturbance of consciousness as the first PAIS symptom, no anticoagulant/antiplatelet therapy after PAIS, diuretic treatment, and pulmonary infection were identified as independent predictive factors for in-hospital mortality among these patients.
