Periodontitis is associated with systemic inflammation and vascular endothelial dysfunction in patients with lacunar infarct
Journal of Periodontology Apr 02, 2019
Leira Y, et al. - In this study, authors assessed 120 cases with lacunar infarct (LI) vs 120 healthy controls to define the association of periodontitis with raised circulating levels of systemic inflammation and endothelial dysfunction biomarkers in LI cases. They found an independent relationship between increased levels of interleukin (IL)-6, pentraxin (PTX) 3, soluble fragment of tumor necrosis factor-like weak inducer of apoptosis (sTWEAK), and amyloid-beta (Aβ) peptides (Aβ1-40) and periodontitis in subjects with LI. They also noticed a positive correlation of periodontal inflamed surface area (PISA) with IL-6, PTX3, sTWEAK, and Aβ1-40 in patients with poor outcome.
