Periodontitis is associated with incident chronic liver disease—A population-based cohort study
Liver International Mar 21, 2019
Helenius-Hietala J, et al. - In this population-based cohort study, researchers ascertained if periodontitis was correlated with incident severe liver disease. Participants in the study were 6,165 people without baseline liver disease who took an interest in the Finnish population-based Health 2000 Survey (BRIF8901) from 2000-2001. During the follow-up, a total of 79 subjects had a severe liver event. An association of periodontitis with the incident liver disease in the general population was found, independent of several confounders. Among subjects with non-alcoholic fatty liver disease or heavy alcohol use at baseline, periodontal disease-associated liver risk was accentuated. The periodontal disease could present a modifiable risk factor for chronic liver disease (a major health concern worldwide) as a preventable disease.
