Periodontitis is associated with incident chronic liver disease—A population-based cohort study
Liver International Nov 10, 2018
Helenius-Hietala J, et al. - Researchers investigated whether there was an association between periodontitis and incident severe liver disease. Study participants were 6,165 people without baseline liver disease who partook in the Finnish population-based Health 2000 Survey (BRIF8901) from 2000-2001. Among subjects with non-alcoholic fatty liver disease or heavy alcohol use at baseline, periodontal disease-associated liver risk was accentuated. Findings suggested an association of periodontitis with the incident liver disease in the general population, independent of several confounders. Periodontal disease might be a modifiable risk factor for chronic liver disease as a preventable disease.
