Seinost G, Horina A, Arefnia B, et al. - Researchers undertook this randomized, controlled trial to evaluate vascular inflammation following periodontal treatment in patients experiencing peripheral arterial disease (PAD). This study included 90 patients having PAD and severe periodontitis. Groups of patients were defined: PT1 group, wherein, 30 patients received non-surgical periodontal therapy and additional systemic antibiotics; and PT2 group, in which, 30 patients underwent the same therapy without antibiotics. The rest of the 30 patients were not treated with periodontal therapy (CG, control group). In the treatment groups, there was a significant improvement in periodontal health following three months of treatment. Findings demonstrated not only the effectiveness but also the safety of periodontal treatment in patients with PAD, however, no attenuation in vascular inflammation was evident.
