Periodontal inflammation is related to increased serum calcitonin gene-related peptide (CGRP) levels in patients with chronic migraine
Journal of Periodontology May 19, 2019
Leira Y, et al. - Since calcitonin gene-related peptide (CGRP) is a vital part in migraine pathophysiology and a relationship was recently found between periodontitis and chronic migraine, researchers investigated whether there is a link between periodontitis and CGRP peripheral levels in a cohort of chronic migraine patients. Study participants were 102 chronic migraineurs and 77 age and gender-matched people without headache/migraine. In patients with chronic migraine, PISA was independently linked to CGRP. In chronic migraine, periodontal inflamed surface area was positively associated with CGRP and IL-6. According to findings, periodontal inflammation in chronic migraineurs is correlated with increased circulating CGRP levels. It is worth further investigation to describe the exact mechanisms by which periodontitis and CGRP are linked in these patients.
