Periodontal and chronic kidney disease association: A systematic review and meta-analysis
Nephrology Feb 03, 2019
Kapellas K, et al. - Researchers examined the association between periodontal disease and chronic kidney disease (CKD) in adults by analyzing data from relevant studies identified via electronic searches of the PubMed, EMBASE, Web of Science, Scopus and Cochrane Library databases. They also hand-searched reference lists. They analyzed 17 studies selected from an initial 4,055 abstracts. Patients with periodontitis vs those without had 60% higher odds of having CKD, as indicated by pooled estimates. Conversely, a similar magnitude—but non-significant higher odds—of having periodontal disease was found among people with CKD 1.69 vs non-CKD. Overall, the existence of a positive link between periodontitis and CKD was demonstrated by moderate evidence.
