Periodontal and chronic kidney disease association: A systematic review and meta-analysis
Nephrology Jun 30, 2018
Kapellas K, et al. - Given observational studies suggest periodontal disease may contribute to kidney functional decline, researchers studied the association between periodontal disease and chronic kidney disease by performing meta-analysis of observational studies involving periodontal disease and chronic kidney disease in adults. They identified relevant studies from the PubMed, EMBASE, Web of Science, Scopus and Cochrane Library databases and also performed hand searching of reference lists. The meta-analysis included a total of 17 studies. They found a positive association between periodontitis and chronic kidney disease was demonstrated by moderate evidence. Based on significant heterogeneity between studies, extremely weak evidence was found for the opposite direction.
