Perineural invasion: Independent prognostic factor in oral cancer that warrants adjuvant treatment
Head & Neck May 10, 2018
Nair D, et al. - Researchers assessed the effect of perineural invasion (PNI) on the survival of patients with oral cavity squamous cell carcinoma (SCC). Both disease-free survival and overall survival was significantly affected by PNI. In tongue cancers, PNI incidence was 20.3% higher. Recurrences and mortality are more likely in patients with early node-negative oral cavity SCC with PNI. In the presence of PNI, aggressive treatment of primary cancer with the coincident management of the neck was important. Survival was worse with PNI, but could be improved with the addition of adjuvant radiation.
