Perilipin 1 expression differentiates liposarcoma from other types of soft tissue sarcoma
American Journal of Pathology May 26, 2019
Straub BK, et al. - Given that the use of perilipins as markers for soft tissue tumor differential diagnosis was only studied in a few cases, researchers examined the expression of perilipins in 478 human soft tissue tumors as well as 60 respective normal tissues. Investigators found that perilipin 2 was more prominent in dedifferentiated and pleomorphic liposarcoma and almost all other high-grade sarcoma in particular. Perilipin 2 was virtually absent in well-differentiated liposarcoma, lipoma, or normal adipose tissue. Overall, the authors concluded that perilipin 1 is a promising marker for the differential diagnosis of liposarcomas from other soft tissue sarcomas, while perilipin 2 is negatively linked to tumor grade and can provide potential therapeutic use.
