Peri-operative allogeneic blood transfusion is associated with poor overall survival in advanced epithelial ovarian cancer; Potential impact of patient blood management on cancer outcomes
Gynecologic Oncology Sep 13, 2018
Connor JP, et al. - Researchers investigated the impact of restrictive transfusion strategies on women with epithelial ovarian cancer (EOC). They analyzed the study population based on whether they were transfused red blood cells (RBCs) during the peri-operative period or not. In ovarian cancer, survival seems to be compromised by peri-operative RBC transfusion. This supports the necessity of minimizing the use of transfusion at the time of debulking surgery. Reduced transfusion rates in this population could be achieved by adhering to evidence-based transfusion guidelines, which may positively influence survival.
