Perceived HIV acquisition risk and low uptake of PrEP among a cohort of transgender women with PrEP indication in the Eastern and Southern United States
Journal of Acquired Immune Deficiency Syndromes Aug 23, 2021
Malone J, Reisner SL, Cooney EE, et al. - Researchers herein described self-perceived risk of HIV among transgender women who are preexposure prophylaxis (PrEP)-indicated.
This cross-sectional analysis was performed including 1,293 transgender women.
Using transgender women–specific criteria, PrEP indication prevalence was 47% (611), which is 155 more than those identified using the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) criteria.
Among PrEP-indicated individuals, PrEP use and adherence was recorded in 13% at the time of the study.
Fifty-five percent of PrEP-indicated participants had low or no self-perceived HIV risk.
Health care providers are required to have further guidance for prescribing PrEP to transgender women.
Further, there is necessity for greater uptake and adherence for optimal effectiveness.
