Peptic ulcer disease is associated with increased risk of chronic urticaria independent of Helicobacter Pylori infection: A population-based cohort study
American Journal of Clinical Dermatology Feb 03, 2021
Chen CM, Huang WT, Chang LJ, et al. - Researchers used the Taiwan National Health Insurance Research Database to assess incidence of as well as risk factors for chronic urticaria in patients suffering from peptic ulcer disease (PUD) in this retrospective nationwide cohort study. Participants were 11,901 patients with PUD who received Helicobacter pylori (HP) therapy (PUD + HP group) as well as an equal number of matched patients without HP infection (PUD − HP group). A total of 23,802 patients without PUD were included for comparison (non-PUD group). Findings revealed the presence of increased chronic urticaria risk in relation to peptic ulcer disease, independent of HP infection. A greater probability of having chronic urticaria was observed in PUD patients who were female or aged 40–64 years. The difference in risk became significant 2 years after patients with PUD had the HP infection tests and endured until the end of follow-up.
