Pentosan polysulfate maculopathy: Prevalence, spectrum of disease, and choroidal imaging analysis based on prospective screening
American Journal of Ophthalmology Mar 04, 2021
Wang D, Velaga SB, Grondin C, et al. - Researchers conducted this prospective cohort study to describe the prevalence and spectrum of disease of pentosan polysulfate (PPS) maculopathy in a large multimodal retinal imaging study and to report the results of choroidal vascularity index analysis. Prospective screening research was performed on 100 (13.4%) of 741 patients prescribed PPS in a large university database. Data reported that the prevalence of PPS maculopathy was 16%. PPS maculopathy was found to be prevalent in 15-20% of PPS users who agreed to participate in this prospective cohort study. Multimodal retinal imaging can show a broad range of findings. Surrogate markers of macular toxicity may be major choroidal abnormalities associated with this characteristic maculopathy.
