Pedunculated morphology of T1 colorectal tumors associates with reduced risk of adverse outcome

Clinical Gastroenterology and Hepatology Aug 23, 2018

Kessels K, et al. - A retrospective study of 1,656 patients diagnosed with T1 colorectal cancers (T1CRC) from 2000 through 2014 at 14 hospitals was performed in The Netherlands to compare adverse outcomes of pedunculated vs non-pedunculated T1CRC. Findings revealed that metastasis, incomplete resection and recurrence did not significantly vary between low-risk pedunculated compared to non-pedunculated T1CRCs. It was noted that incomplete resection and recurrence were significantly lower for high-risk pedunculated compared to non-pedunculated T1CRCs. Researchers found pedunculated morphology to be independently linked with a decreased risk of adverse outcome in a T1CRC population at high risk of adverse outcome. They suggested that including morphologic features of tumors in risk assessment may help forecast outcomes of patients with T1CRC and help recognize the best candidates for surgery.
