Pediatric tonsillectomy: A short-term and long-term comparison of intracapsular vs extracapsular techniques
International Journal of Pediatric Otorhinolaryngology Mar 06, 2020
Soaper AL, et al. - Researchers conducted a multicenter, retrospective chart review to examine the short and long-term outcomes of intracapsular as compared with extracapsular tonsillectomy, and show if the complication rates are similar between methods. Children (n = 2,508) undergoing tonsillectomy and adenotonsillectomy were identified. Data reported that the rate of post-tonsillectomy hemorrhage with intracapsular tonsillectomy was 0.76%, compared with 2.3% in the extracapsular group. This retrospective review contrasting the intracapsular and extracapsular techniques for tonsillectomy provides further proof of the advantages of this technique. Continuing to offer intracapsular tonsillectomy to patients and their families during preoperative discussions is worthwhile.
