Pediatric recurrent acute mastoiditis: Risk factors and insights into pathogenesis
International Journal of Pediatric Otorhinolaryngology Jun 16, 2018
Mierzwinski J, et al. - Authors evaluated the pathogenesis, risk factors of acute mastoiditis in children. The only bacteria isolated in this group was Streptococcus pneumoniae. Among recurrent mastoiditis patients, fewer intracranial/intratemporal complications were identified. Experts did not observe any recurrence in a group of patients treated with more extensive surgical communication during mastoidectomy for primary acute mastoiditis (wide mastoidectomy with broad attic exposure and posterior tympanotomy). The recurrent acute mastoiditis episodes could be prevented by more aggressive opening between the mastoid cavity and middle ear.
