Pediatric preseptal and orbital cellulitis: A 10-YEAR experience
International Journal of Pediatric Otorhinolaryngology Feb 12, 2019
Santos JC, et al. - In this retrospective study, researchers analyzed 122 juvenile/adolescents admitted to a central hospital between 2007 and 2017, to identify the clinical characteristics, epidemiology, and treatment of preseptal and orbital cellulitis cases. They noticed sinusitis as the most common predisposing factor, succeeded by a dental abscess in preseptal cellulitis and by external ocular infections (12.5%) in orbital cellulitis. Association of sinusitis with orbital cellulitis and dental abscess and trauma with preseptal cellulitis were also noted. They recorded correlation of orbital cellulitis and fever, photophobia, ocular pain, painful eye movements, proptosis, rhinorrhea, and vision impairment. They found candidates with no deterioration when scanned through CT imaging.
