Pediatric obstructive sleep apnea screening questionnaire and postoperative outcomes: A prospective observational study
International Journal of Pediatric Otorhinolaryngology Sep 05, 2019
Raman VT, Geyer E, Miller R, et al. - Using the previously described 6-point questionnaire, researchers identified obstructive sleep apnea (OSA) in children and assessed its use for anticipating postoperative respiratory events. Children between the ages of 3 and 18 were eligible for surgery. Criteria for exclusion were emergency surgery or reluctance to take part. The research included 749 patients. The final analysis included 707 patients (mean age 12 ± 4 years). In children presenting with non-otolaryngological surgical procedures, the incidence of OSA/sleep-disordered breathing is underestimated. Although patients judged to have OSA on the 6-item question may need for supplemental oxygen longer in the Post Anesthesia Care Unit, no other outcomes differences have been observed.
