Pediatric human immunodeficiency virus and otolaryngologic manifestations: An analysis of hospital admissions from 1997 to 2012
The Laryngoscope Nov 01, 2019
Govindan A, et al. - Since many HIV–infected pediatric patients develop otolaryngologic disease, researchers described their otolaryngologic manifestations by type and demographic variation, and model temporal trends. Utilizing the Kids’ Inpatient Database, a retrospective review was conducted. The inclusion criteria was met by a total of 11,150 cases. The authors discovered that patients in the South were much more likely to be admitted for infection, with non-infectious Northeast and West predominance. The otolaryngologic disease accounts for almost one-fifth of HIV-infected children's hospitalizations, but rates of hospitalization and otolaryngologic manifestations have gradually declined over time. Nowadays, children infected with HIV are more likely to have the non-infectious disease than infectious.
