PEAK PlasmaBlade vs monopolar electrocautery tonsillectomy in adults: A prospective double-blinded randomized controlled trial
American Journal of Otolaryngology - Head and Neck Medicine and Surgery Apr 13, 2019
Tan A, et al. - Researchers evaluated 58 individuals into 2 groups: PEAK PlasmaBlade (n = 29) or monopolar electrocautery (n = 29) tonsillectomy, to assess postoperative pain and recovery after PEAK PlasmaBlade and monopolar electrocautery tonsillectomy in the prospective double-blinded randomized controlled trial. They noted the achievement of pain-free swallowing in a shorter time in the PEAK PlasmaBlade group compared to the electrocautery group (13.28 vs 15.76 days). They did not observe significant differences in the incidence of postoperative hemorrhage, a daily visual analog score for pain, number of tablets of analgesia taken as well as time taken to return to soft diet, normal diet and activities for both groups. Overall, they reported a faster recovery period in terms of time taken to achieve pain-free swallowing in PEAK PlasmaBlade tonsillectomy a compared to monopolar electrocautery tonsillectomy.
