Peak nasal inspiratory flow measurement and visual analogue scale in a large adult population
Clinical Otolaryngology Apr 26, 2019
Ottaviano G, et al. - Researchers performed this prospective clinical study of a total of 641 consecutive subjects, to assess how peak nasal inspiratory flow (PNIF) measurements are correlated with the subjective sensation of nasal obstruction measured by means of a visual analog scale (VAS) in a large population of consecutive rhinologic patients. Findings revealed significant, but a low degree, correlation of visual analogue scale and PNIF, in a large population of rhinologic patients. In view of being cheap and simple to use, peak nasal inspiratory flow seems valuable in assisting clinicians dealing with “airway” diseases in their daily clinical practice in order to provide comprehensive information on nasal function. Some important rough insights on VAS could be gained assessing peak nasal inspiratory flow, however, these measurements cannot be alternative to each other.
