Patterns of postpartum ambulatory care follow‐up care among women with hypertensive disorders of pregnancy
Journal of the American Heart Association Sep 04, 2020
Lewey J, Levine LD, Yang L, et al. - Via assessing a nationally representative sample of commercially insured women, researchers aimed at describing patterns of postpartum visits with primary care and women's health providers (eg, family medicine and obstetrics) among women with and without hypertensive disorders of pregnancy (HDP). Using insurance claims from a US health insurance database, they identified 566,059 women with completed pregnancies between 2005 and 2014. Analysis revealed low rates of continuity care follow‐up after a pregnancy complicated by hypertension. At 6 months, primary care visits were reported for 13% of women with normotensive pregnancies, 18% with HDP, and 23% with chronic hypertension. Multivariable analysis suggest 16% higher likelihood to have postpartum continuity follow‐up among women with severe preeclampsia. Following were the factors linked with a lower likelihood of any follow‐up: age ≥ 30 years, Black race, Hispanic ethnicity, and having multiple gestations.
