Patterns of glucose-lowering medication use in patients with type 2 diabetes and heart failure: Insights from the diabetes collaborative registry (DCR)
American Heart Journal Jun 21, 2018
Arnold SV, et al. - Researchers used a diabetes collaborative registry (a US-based outpatient registry of adults with diabetes) to assess existing patterns of glucose-lowering medication use in adults with type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2D) both with and without heart failure (HF). Adjusting for age, chronic kidney disease (CKD), coronary artery disease (CAD), number of glucose-lowering medications, and insurance, the link between concomitant HF with use of each glucose-lowering medication class was assessed using hierarchical, modified Poisson regression models. They reported an HF diagnosis, predominantly HFpEF, was present in a quarter of adults with T2D. In HF patients, the use of certain T2D medication appeared consistent with evidence (less use of thiazolidinediones), while others appeared contrary to evidence (less use of metformin and SGLT2 inhibitors).
