Patterns of care and survival in elderly patients with locally advanced soft tissue sarcoma
American Journal of Clinical Oncology Oct 07, 2019
Greto D, Saieva C, Loi M, et al. - In elderly soft tissue sarcoma (STS) patients, researchers examined patterns of care and their effect on clinical outcome and treatment-related toxicity. Data of > 65-year-old patients diagnosed with locally advanced STS between 1991 and 2017 in a single institution were retrospectively collected. The study sample consisted of 111 patients. In 41.4% of patients, anthracycline-based chemotherapy was prescribed. According to findings, elderly STS patients receiving a tailored treatment that involves surgery, radiotherapy, and/or chemotherapy reported an improved outcome, but caution is advised due to increased age-related toxicity. Comorbidities should be considered in order to provide this vulnerable patient population with the best treatment choice.
