Patterns of bone metastases from head and neck squamous cell carcinoma

Auris Nasus Larynx Aug 28, 2019

Suzuki A, Kashiwagi N, Doi H, et al. - In this investigation, researchers reported clinical characteristics of bone metastases (BM) from head and neck squamous cell carcinoma (HNSCC). Of the 772 patients diagnosed with HNSCC over 9 years in the hospital, 30 patients had clinical proof of BM (mean age was 63 years). According to results, the thoracolumbar spine was the most commonly affected site, accounting for 34% of total BM, followed by the pelvis, shoulder and thorax, and the extremities. In particular, metastases to bones above the clavicle (craniofacial bones and cervical spine) represented only 3% of all bone lesions. OS has not been extended either by chemotherapy or radiotherapy. Overall, the authors concluded that 30% of BM cases from HNSCC exhibited bone-exclusive and monostotic metastases. These patients tended to have a more favorable prognosis than patients with metastases of multi-organ or polyostotic metastases.
