Pattern of biliary disease following laparoscopic sleeve gastrectomy in adolescents
Obesity Nov 17, 2019
Tashiro J, et al. - In this investigation involving 309 patients, researchers ascertained if obstructive biliary complications after rapid, laparoscopic sleeve gastrectomy (LSG)-related weight loss occur similarly in adolescents vs adults. Patients had LSG between 2010 and 2019. Data reported that preoperative excess BMI loss was 7.1%. Compared with adults, pediatric patients present with a biliary disease (BD) at a similar rate after LSG. However, the majority of adolescents manifest with acute pancreatitis (AP). Therefore, when evaluating post-LSG abdominal symptoms, pancreatitis should be high on the list of differential diagnoses. Additional studies are warranted to elucidate the future prevention pathophysiology of post-LSG AP because its etiology may or may not be related solely to BD.
