Patients undergoing recurrent CT exams: Assessment of patients with non-malignant diseases, reasons for imaging and imaging appropriateness

Rehani MM, Melick ER, Alvi RM, et al. - From the cohort of individuals who received cumulative effective dose of ≥ 100 mSv over a 5-year period, a sub-set was recognized with non-malignant diseases in order to ascertain number of cases without malignancy and ≤ 40 years of age with high cumulative radiation doses via recurrent CT exams and evaluate imaging appropriateness. A condition wherein individuals in age ≤ 40 years need or are thought to needing many CT exams over the course of a few years was faced however the radiation risk generated concern. Moreover, a fair number of conditions for which AUC is not available was noted. Proposed solutions involve the development of CT scanners with lesser radiation dose and additional development of suitability criteria.
