Patients' prognosis of intrahepatic cholangiocarcinoma and combined hepatocellular-cholangiocarcinoma after resection
Cancer Medicine Aug 19, 2019
Song P, Midorikawa Y, Nakayama H, et al. - Given that combined hepatocellular-cholangiocarcinoma (cHCC-CC) and intrahepatic cholangiocarcinoma (ICC) are classified into one category, researchers investigated if the grouping of ICC and cHCC-CC is justified as there exists a controversy regarding the comparison of prognosis of the two carcinomas. So, they analyzed surgical results for 61 patients with ICC and 29 patients with cHCC-CC who had liver resection from 2001 to 2017. In both groups, independent risk factors for recurrence-free survival (RFS) were tumor number and vascular invasion. Patients with cHCC-CC had poorer median RFS (0.9 years) as compared with that seen in patients with ICC; 0% and 37.7% were the respective rates of RFS at 5 years. Because of a significant difference observed in RFS between ICC and cHCC-CC, classifying these two into different categories was supported.
