Patients' perspective of timeliness and usefulness of an outpatient supportive care referral at a comprehensive cancer center
Journal of Pain and Symptom Management Aug 02, 2019
Wong A, Vidal M, Prado B, et al. - Researchers conducted this cross-sectional prospective study in supportive care (SC) clinic at a comprehensive cancer center to investigate patients' perceptions of timeliness of referral to SC among patients (aged 18 years or older) with advanced cancer. In addition, they examined how SC referral is associated with their survival. As per most patients with a median survival of 10 months, SC referral was timely and useful. This perception of referral timing was identified to be driven by patient care needs rather than the timing of advanced cancer diagnosis. The perception of being referred to early was reported by patients with lower symptom burden.
